The Weather Company is looking for an experienced, proactive, customer-oriented systems engineer for our Global Technology Operations team. Our team is chartered with maximizing systems availability, defining and maintaining performance Service Level Agreements (SLA) , and being the “customer advocate” for our end users, while providing world-class support for our big data platform, weather systems, mobile apps, and our digital properties such as weather.com and wunderground.com.
Duties and Responsibilities:
This Engineer position is responsible for building and implementing reporting and alerting mechanisms to measure performance and user experience. This position is also responsible for doing heavy analysis of performance/monitoring data to mitigate production issues and impacts. Similarly, the position will work closely with our testing and agile development teams to support performance test cycles as part of QA. This individual will also work with other system engineers and project managers to ensure new projects and products adhere to strict performance/SLA requirements as part of our software development lifecycle.
Excellent system analysis skills
Excellent mathematical and computational skills
Ability to create, interpret, and present mathematical graphs such as throughput charts, flow diagrams, and excel spreadsheet data to convey technical issues and results.
Ability to understand, convey, and communicate service level metric calculations such as system uptime, downtime, MTTR, etc.
Working knowledge and understanding of data warehouse, data mining, and reporting tools
Solid understanding of performance/diagnostic tools and utilities that are used in a unix/linux software development environment
Familiar with software development and software testing lifecycles, particularly in agile/scrum environments
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Internally driven and able to multi-task in a fast-paced environment
Dependable, detail oriented and well organized
Able to convey information concisely and clearly to all levels of personnel.
Able to work with minimal supervision and to work on several active tasks simultaneously.
Exceptional interpersonal and teamwork skills required
Education & Experience
3 - 5 years of software development, systems analysis, or systems administration required
2 - 5 years experience using spreadsheet tools such as Excel, google sheets, etc.
Solid understanding of unix/linux and virtual operating systems and related technology
Experience with performance testing and software testing methodologies
Experience in real-user monitoring (RUM) tools such as Rigor, Catchpoint, Keynote, etc. highly desired
Experience in large-scale performance/diagnostic and/or capacity planning toolset desired
Experience supporting web sites, web services, mobile apps, and digital content systems and products preferred
Bachelor’s degree or industry-equivalent experience is required
